School History

Westgate School moved to the Summerhill Road site in the mid-seventies from a smaller site at the end of Hythe Street. The new site had, until then, been used as a Girls' Secondary School. From that time the school has grown from around 90 pupils to the present day average figure of 290 pupils.

Various changes have been made to the building to accommodate primary aged children and in 1994 four purpose-built Infant classrooms were added to the school, with a small enclosed playground. These rooms greatly enhance the educational possibilities and opportunities we can offer the children.

At present there are ten classes, a television room, a resources room, a library, a music room and a room used by peripatetic staff and parent helpers. We also have a room set aside as a computer suite, with 16 new computers with Internet facilities. At the back of the main building there is a quadrangle which is a contained area. There is also an environmental area, which includes a pond.

The close proximity of the school to the town means we can make good use of the historical and geographical aspects of the area.
